Good news! It is time to get your 3d patterns shirt back on AGAIN with the great return of the X-MIX nights in Stattbad next October 25th and November 22nd. Who else could bring the 1990′s up better than !K7 records?
The independent label has raised from underground to extreme coolness and definitely won a longevity price after 25 years of advanced dancing activities. “Been there, done that, got the the shirt” could have been the new fragance of the label manager Horst Weidenmüller if Berlin would have been Paris. Instead of this, Horst has turned his incredible experience into a pandora archive box.
The Subkultur/Berlin 80′s events were the starting point of a series of art and music events curated by !K7 in Stattbad and Mindpirates. After celebrating the 80′s raw rock side of Berlin, it is now the time to pay a tribute to the effervescent club scene of the 90′s with the X-MIX nights in partnership with Chez Jacki.
This pionneer concept developed by !K7 was an audio-visual compilation with a stream of animated video to play while listening to the mix. The project featured some legendary name of the techno scene: Laurent Garnier, Ritchie Hawtin, Dave Clarke, Dj Hell or John Acquaviva who will launch the dancefloor of the X MIX premiere along the side of the berliner producers Derek Plaslaiko, Hrdvision , Marius Reisser and the digital artists Pussykrew (interview below).
ORIGINAL 90′s VS DIGITAL 00′s INTERVIEW WITH THE PUSSYKREW !
The equal treatment of the music and the visual naturally lead to explore a more contemporary dimension with live performances. Answering to this invitation, the digital art collective Pussykrew who will remodel live some X Mix video sample archives with their own creations. The up coming berlin based duo of Ewelina Aleksandrowicz and Andrzej Wojtas recently spread their glitchy punk visuals up to the Saatchi Gallery in London while collaborating with the most accurate music festival network ICAS.
DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF AS PUNK?
Pretty much yes, in many ways and many levels. I guess the way we live can be considered as post-modern punk kid. Our art practice expresses strong diy ethos. We are independent, blusterous individuals, we like challenges and intense live experiences. We are not so destructive though, rather productive, focused on creating quality work and gaining new skills. Although many of our works reflect on the theme of cathartic destruction. There are elements in our practice, life style, teenage fascinations that can be considered as ‘punk’, but we would prefer not to use any names to describe ourselves.
WHAT IS GLITCH?
Glitch is a spontaneous or deliberately created error. Glitch feels like a destruction or deconstruction of the material, analogue, digital, software or hardware, that builds up a new aesthetic. For us glitch, despite its incredible aesthetics has a very symbolic meaning. It is like some sort of essence of human failure, system collapse, not in a negative way though, rather contemplative. We are truly fascinated by the idea of symbolic transformation and digital-material ‘waste land ‘. We like to destroy things in a beautiful way . Pussykrew started in 2004 from hacked vhs players and live analog glitchy visuals , using old analogue mixers etc, than shifted to digital manipulation and different tools, … glitch is magic : )
IS HD BORING?
Not at all . Our creative practice is a multidimensional path. We are generating filthy glitchy sound, reactive content, parallelly we create distinctive sterile, cinematic poetry, unreal with its high quality. We love bipolar layers, contrasts and shifts. There are many things out there that we feed on. We like to mix ‘ old ‘ and ‘ new ‘ tools, and experiment a lot.
WHAT IS THE LIMIT OF TECHNOLOGY?
No limits. The limit is the human mind. Impossible is nothing.
HOW DID YOU ENDED UP DOING LARGE SCALE VIDEO INSTALLATION?
We are presenting our works in many different forms and contexts. Its very fluid and organic. For theX-MIX event we wanted to work with the space and materials that are available, in order to create a nostalgic 90s style environment with old glitchy tv screens and 3d generated animations, live visual.
ARE YOU VIDEO GAME ADDICT?
Not really playing any video games at the moment. But always wanted to create a gaming environment for live visual experience. We are ‘virtual reality’ addicts, whatever that means using lots of cgi in our works. Currently learning unity.
WHAT IS THE PERFECT SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR VIDEO?
It depends on the video. We create different images and adore various sounds. In our last work, we composed the sound ourselves. Sometimes perfect music would be harsh noise or ambient drone scape and other time aggressive heavy techno or carribean rhythms. Our taste, style and expression is very eclectic, but all those elements need to have something in common: intensity.
WHAT IS YOUR NEXT CHALLENGE ?
We are going to Teheran in November for a group exhibition on violence and identity / material deconstruction (including glitch : ). The exhibition is called – / It Must Be Destroyed /. Then we are attending Mira Festival in Barcelona, where we’re doing live visuals for Stellar Om Source and Ital Tek and presenting our interactive installation ‘Soft Shell ‘.
