The day following their gig at “Madame Claude”, in the wrangelkiez,
I met GR†LLGR†LL & O F F.
I discovered the term “witch house” after your first gig. I went to listen other bands I never heard about. Why this witch house so obscure? It is pretty unknown yet. Is it because it’s kind of new or it hasn’t been really known yet?
GR†LLGR†LL: I don’t think “witch house” means anything. We do music, emotions. For me it’s more a mouvement like do it yourself music. I never sing about witches and don’t do house music.
We want to share some dark emotions, melancolic slowbeats.
And what about your music background?
GR†LLGR†LL: I guess for me it’s mostly: folk, blues, emotional music, and pop music I always like. Not banal but really straight commercial would be R Kelly, his lyrics are really simple, to the point it’s kind of lame but still it touchs me.
Is there some kind of humour in this?
GR†LLGR†LL: Some stuff I did were quite sarcastical, but for what we do together, it’s actually not. I don’t want to be too serious about it, but for me it is.
O F F: the same!
GR†LLGR†LL: I started to do GR†LLGR†LL in 2007 or something, and it was mostly based on drawings, collages and paintings. It kind of made sense to put everything together. I tought it was much more fun to make music in the end. Still the visual thing is a big part of the music, it goes together, When I make music I have images in my head.
( GR†LLGR†LL starts to bleed, hmm… no ritual?)
O F F: The songs you that you heard was what I did before, like 2 years ago. I just made this little songs, but I didn’t play it to anyone, just to myself. Then I played it to GR†LLGR†LL, he liked it and we started to do music together. Then we started to make some other songs together. And when we play in concert, we play some of my older stuff, and some from GR†LLGR†LL but together.
GR†LLGR†LL: My old stuff changes when we play it together.
And now, are you preparing an album?
O F F: It’s not an album, we just finished some new songs, and the next songs we gonna make together will be more emotional, fragile, less “club”. I think when we made our first two songs together, we were more shy with each other so it was easier to be a bit less personnal. Now it’s easier to make more personal stuff together. I think it’s more what we’re gonna be doing. We’re not gonna release it, if somedoby wants a song we’re gonna go to their house and sing it.
Why do you wear masks on stage?
O F F: First we are shy, and for me, the songs, the lyrics… it’s almost too personnal. So I don’t really feel myself singing it. And that’s the same reason we use this not really human effect on my voice, so it doesn’t look like my voice.
GR†LLGR†LL: For me, when I do the music or drawings, I don’t want it to be too connected to me. Of course it is. It’s personnal but I want people to not associate the music to the guy. I want to think that it’s recorded in a small basement or it comes from some people in the woods. I prefer it to be anonymous. I want people to make their own idea of who it is, where it’s from, if it’s a girl or a boy,or whatever. What i’m interrested in is to make a glimpses of emotions.
GR†LLGR†LL: What i enjoy the most doing music with GR†LLGR†LL & O F F is the contrast. We are like equal in some point but also really different, like sweat and sour, you see what I mean. It’s a nice contrast. We both bring different things.
O F F: That’s true.
GR†LLGR†LL: If I did something…
O F F: You don’t do Shakira moves!
GR†LLGR†LL: I mean if I would do it with sombody like me, it would be kind of lame.
We are connected emotionaly but we have different way to express it.
When did you decide to do music together?
O F F: In the fall 2010.
And now we just want to play live everyday!
